N a t u r e s c a p e s An endless and featureless plain is how one can describe Sambhar Lake, India's largest saltwater lake (190 sq km in size at full capacity), situated approximately 60 kms west of Jaipur. More than 8 percent of India's salt comes from this lake and salt, supposedly, has been mined here for over a thousand years! Sambhar lake is also a Ramsar site, most notable for its large population of Flamingos. The 'pink' lining visible on the horizon in this photo is actually a huge group (4,000+) of Lesser Flamingos (Phoenicopterus minor)! Photo date: Sept. 2005 |
